Chapter 16
Mindy was impressed that James’s plan had gone so well a few days ago. When they’d finally returned home with Jory, Aunt Cappy had not only cooked and served Charlie dinner, but made him eat pie and have about five cups of coffee.
Jory had been so tired after spending the day with her new friends, that she hadn’t even noticed the strong smell of alcohol that reeked in the kitchen.
Then after Mindy’s grandfather fell asleep in his easy chair, James had taken Aunt Cappy home. Mindy had almost laughed when she heard the bottles clanking together in Aunt Cappy’s carpetbag, and knew the old man wasn’t going to be happy to find them missing when he awoke.
It was early, only five in the morning, but Mindy had purposely gotten up early, even though she was dead tired, because she wanted to help James with the chores before she left for the day. Piper was picking her up this morning, and she was getting together with the wives of all the Taylor brothers. They were having brunch at Cat’s house, and giving each other manicures afterwards.
She looked forward to this because although she’d met all of James’s brothers, she’d been so busy she’d barely had time to spend with the girls. She really wanted to get to know them. A girl’s day out was exactly what she needed.
She threw her sweatshirt over her knee-length nightie, having heard James leave the house a while ago. She smelled coffee, and thought she’d have a quick cup before she got dressed, because if she didn’t, she’d be worthless to help him do anything. She knew Jory would sleep late since it was Saturday, and kissed her gently atop the head. She was so happy James had helped her make friends, inviting all the kids to their Halloween party. Jory had seemed happier lately, and she had James to thank.
It was still dark, and Mindy thought she might need a flashlight outside, so she slipped into her sandals and opened the bedstand drawer, digging her hand around to look for one. She came across something that looked like a photo, and pulled it out, thinking James might have a childhood photo stashed away, and she really wanted to see it. So she headed out to the kitchen to get some coffee with the photo in her hand.
The door to her grandfather’s room was closed and she heard him snoring. No doubt he’d overslept and James hadn’t wanted to wake him.
She stuck the photo in her pocket, and after she poured herself a cup of coffee and took a sip, she stood in front of the stove light and pulled the photo out to look at it.
What she saw wasn’t anything she expected. Instead of photo of him with his brothers, she saw a shirtless James with his arms wrapped around a buxom blond. The girl had James’s cowboy hat on her head, and her arms were wrapped around him with her hands on his butt.
